For non-emergency incidents, many police departments now let you file a report online — saving time and freeing officers for urgent calls. Here is how the process typically works.
Online reporting is generally for non-emergencies with no suspect present: thefts, vandalism, lost property, and some vehicle break-ins. If a crime is in progress or anyone is in danger, always call 911 instead.
Visit your local police department's website, find the online reporting portal, complete the form, and submit. You will usually receive a case number by email — keep it for insurance and follow-up.
Understand your document by reading how to read a police report. To help your neighbors, also add the incident to a community crime map — and remember you can always report anonymously when needed.
